This is a very practical course and covers your role and responsibilities, medication safety, administration, documentation, common errors, restrictive practices, and what to do when something doesn’t go to plan.

Understanding medication support and the support worker’s roles and responsibilities.
Module 2 – Understanding Medications
Medication types, labels, instructions, schedules and important medication information.
Module 3 – Medication Safety
Safe storage, handling and the checks that help prevent medication errors.
Module 4 – Supporting Medication Administration
Practical guidance for safely assisting or administering medication in community settings.
Module 5 – Medication Administration Techniques
Different ways medications may be taken or administered and the safe practices workers need to follow.
Module 6 – Documentation and Record Keeping
MAR charts, medication records and other tools used to accurately document medication support.
Module 7 – Medication Errors, Side Effects and Adverse Reactions
Recognising problems and knowing when and how to respond, report and seek assistance.
Module 8 – Medication Adherence and Communication
Understanding why people may not take medication as planned and supporting choice, communication and informed decision-making.
Module 9 – Medication and Restrictive Practices
Understanding when medication may be considered a restrictive practice, including chemical restraint, and the responsibilities of support workers.
Module 10 – Safe Medication Support in Practice
Bringing everything together through everyday situations, good practice, monitoring, reporting and knowing when to seek guidance.

It is particularly useful for workers who prompt, assist with, administer, document or monitor medication support as part of their role.
No previous medication training is required.
Workers should always follow their organisation’s policies and procedures, the person’s medication instructions and support plan, and
work within their role and level of competency.
How long does the course take to complete?
The course is self-paced, meaning the time it takes to complete varies depending on your schedule.
Whether you tackle it in a marathon session over a weekend or spread it out over several weeks during your spare time is entirely up to you. As a guide, students tell us that it has taken
them anywhere from 1.5 - 2.5 hours to complete.
